Describe 4 tests for evaluation of GFR in kidney

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The four tests for evaluation of GFR in kidney are:

1. Creatinine Clearance Test: It is a useful method for approximation of GFR. Creatinine Clearance Rate is volume of blood plasma that is cleared of creatinine per unit time.

2. Inulin Clearance Test: Inulin or sinistrin can be injected into the blood stream and GFR can be determined. They are neither reabsorbed nor secreted by the kidney after glomerular filtration. So their rate of excretion is directly proportional to the rate of filtration of water and solutes across the glomerular filter.

3. Radioactive Tracers: Radioactive substances, in particular chromium-51 and technetium-99m are employed to measure GFR. Use of 51Cr‑EDTA is believed to be a reference standard measure in UK.

4. PCR: It measures Proetin Creatinine Ratio in the morning urine sample to asessa the filtration rate of glomerulus.

Explain how intrinsic myogenic mechanisms within the kidney would regulate the following situations. Consider first how glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is affected by the situation and how the kidney would use its intrinsic mechanisms to help maintain consistent GFR. (6 pts) a.
