There are two strains of heamophilus influenzae encapsulated also called as typeable and non-encapsulated also called as non-typeable. They are gram negative cocobacilli. The encapsulated or typeable haemophilus influenzae causes most of the cases of pneumonia in the elderly patients. Whereas, the non-encapsulated or non-typeable strain causes chronic bronchitis in elderly and ear infections in children.
