Homework Answers

Answer #1

Important requirements for successful grafting in woody plants are:-

1)Cambial regions of scions and stock must be in intimate contact.for proper healing and flow of water and nutrients cut surface should be held tightly

2)Grafting must be done when the stock and scion are in the proper physiological stage. Scions must be dominant for all grafting operations except budding. depending on the budding method Scions for budding can be either dormant or actively growing., depending on the grafting method Rootstocks can be growing or dormant.

3)Cut surfaces should not come in contact with the soil, which contains rotting organisms. Unless scions are in scarce supply, it is usually good to discard any that are dropped on the ground.

In an evolutionary context, successful herbivores must be able to recognize potentially lethal plants, avoid them, and pass these behaviours on to their offspring. Successful plants are those that avoid the highest level of herbivory from predators. Let us assume that a HIGH level of cyanogenic plant poison delivers a lethal dose to herbivores, while a LOW level sickens but does not kill herbivores. Which of these two strategies do you think is more evolutionarily advantageous to the plant? Explain...

Construct (draw) a phylogeny of all plants and include important evolutionary innovations in the nodes of this tree. Create a key (i.e., a list of characteristics) of each of the groups that include the non-vascular plants, vascular plants without seeds, vascular plants with seeds without flowers and flowering plants. You should include the names of the most important groups on each branch (e.g., mosses, ginkgo, ferns, etc.)
