Mutations in germ-line cells can be passed on to
offspring. These occur in reproductive cells like eggs and sperm and
hence the name germ line mutations. This mutation can be passed to
an organism's offspring.
Germ cells give rise to gametes and gamete can carry the
mutation and it will be passed on to the next generation.
Somatic mutations occur in non-reproductive cells and they are
passed to daughter cells during mitosis but not to offspring during
sexual reproduction.
