After eating a large meal you feel full and uncomfortable. What branch of the peripheral nervous system (somatic or autonomic) is responsible for this feeling? How does it send this message from the stomach to the brain? While resting after your meal, you suddenly see an animal that begins chasing you . What roles would your sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems play in your digestive processes?
The autonomic nervous system (division of peripheral nervous system) is responsible for this feeling. Because, while taking food voluntarily, it will moves to stomach involuntary. Such functions are controled by autonomic nervous system i.e. self regulating system. The enteric nervous system of autonomic nervous system, which is located around the digestive tract might transmits the signal independently from smooth muscles (stomach) to brain. The other two types of autonomic nervous system are sympathetic and parasymphathetic system. While our body encountered the physical danger, neither symphathetic nervous system slows down the digestion nor parasymphathetic system increases the same function.
