Explain why the body must use anaerobic respiration (fermentation) instead of cellular respiration during intense physical activity.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Human body can generate energy using both aerobic and anaerobic respiration. The amount of energy generated by aerobic respiration is more than that of anaerobic respiration. So generally muscle cells generate energy by aerobic respiration. During intense physical activity the muscle cells fall short of oxygen but have to work. Thus, body needs anaerobic respiration to continue the muscle activity during intense physical activity. Anaerobic respiration give rise to lactic acid formation in muscle cells which causes cramps in muscles.

Some explanations of glycolysis, lactic acid fermentation and aerobic cellular respiration seem to indicate that your cells SWITCH between the two options to finish glycolysis: lactic acid fermentation OR cellular respiration. This is not the case! Your cells do not choose EITHER lactic acid fermentation OR aerobic cellular respiration. What is the necessary item for glycolysis to continue to aerobic cellular respiration instead of lactic acid fermentation? Unless you are dead (no respiration, no blood circulation), are your muscle cells...

Now, for each of the substances below, consider the impact of each substance on cellular respiration. Substance A’s Effect: Prevents electrons from binding to NAD+. Determine whether this substance would result in weight gain or weight loss. Explain your reasoning. Substance B’s Effect: Increases the number of protons concentrated in the mitochondria intermembrane compartment Determine whether this substance would result in weight gain or weight loss. Explain your reasoning. The substances described above all interfere with aerobic respiration, requiring oxygen....
