Why does natural selection favor mate choice? What factor is most important in determining which sex exhibits mate choice?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Sexual selection favors traits that give the bearer an advantage in attracting high qualities of mates or competing for them. Such traits can also contribute to prezygotic isolation between population ,which is cinsidered as best step for speciation.

Mate choice which is otherwise known as intersexual selection ,happens only when females choose between male mates. Traits selected by male are often known as secondary sexual characterstics like horns , antlers etc which Darwin considered as weapons and the traits selected by mate choices are known as ornaments.

Traffic volume is an important factor for determining the most cost-effective method to surface a road. Suppose that the average number of vehicles passing a certain point on a road is 2 every 30 seconds. Explain why to find the probability that more than 5 cars will pass the point in 1 minute (60 seconds) can be found with the R-code: 1-ppois(5,4) #or ppois(5,4, lower.tail = FALSE) Hint: First find what the average number of vehicles passes through the point...

In systems in which there is strong male-male competition for mates, natural selection should favor a strategy in which females in poor condition produce female offspring preferentially.      T     F All scientists have agreed on what criteria must be met before two populations can be designated as separate species.      T     F When two populations are separated geographically with no gene flow happening between them, genetic drift will always act in both populations, causing the populations to diverge.      T     F Exploitative interactions,...
