Steps for glycogen synthesis: The following are the steps for formation of glycogen( glycogenesis)

  1. Glucose -6 phosphate is converted into Glucose -1 phosphate with the help of enzyme phosphoglucomutase
  2. Glucose -1 phosphate is converted into UDP (uridine diphosphate) with the help of the enzyme UDP glucose pyrophosphorylase . Here pyro phosphate is formed from UTP which is hydrolyzed in to two phosphate molecules
  3. UDP Glucose molecule are added to each tyrosine residue by the enzyme glycogenin to create glycogen chain
  4. Glycogen synthase binds to the growing glycogen chain and adds UDP glucose to the 1-4 glycosyl residue of glycogen chain which forms more alpha bonds in the process
  5. Branches are made by amylo-alpha(1:4) – alpha – (1:6) transglysylase to form the glycogen
