What is the difference between cell fate and cell determination in embryology and what could the molecular mechanisms for achieving such cell determination be? In your answer describe the order of events for cells in an embryo for: differentiation, cell fate, and determination?

Answer #1

As embryos mature, more complexfate determination occurs as structures appear, and cells differentiate, beginning to perform specific functions. Determination is followed by differentiation, the actual changes in biochemistry, structure, and function that result in specific cell types.

In some cases, determination results from the asymmetric segregation ofcellular determinants. However, in most cases, determination is the result of inductive signaling between cells. This results in two different daughter cells, which then take on different cell fates based on differences in gene expression.

In a hypothetical embryo, cell A divides to produce two daughter cells, X and Y. Within half an hour of this division, X begins expressing mRNAs characteristic of endoderm whereas Y does not. a) [8pts] Explain in general terms (no specific names required) two ways that this difference between X and Y could have arisen. b) [4pts] Is cell X determined to become endoderm at this time? What is the difference between reproductive cloning and therapeutic cloning? Group of answer choices Therapeutic cloning supplies cells for repair of diseased or injured organs, whereas reproductive cloning produces a cloned organism. Reproductive cloning uses pluripotent cells, whereas therapeutic cloning does not. Reproductive cloning uses embryonic stem cells, whereas therapeutic cloning does not. Therapeutic cloning uses nuclei of adult cells transplanted into enucleated nonfertilized eggs. A mutation that prevents the addition of the 5’cap would most likely have what effect?...
