Polyketide synthases (PKS) are a multi-domain or multifunctional protein that is involved in the production of polyketides. These polyketides are a large class of secondary metabolite that is produced by the microorganisms like bacteria, fungi etc.
These are of three types:
Type I PKS: Type I PKS consists of multifunctional enzymes that are organized into modules. Each of these harbors a set of non-iteratively acting functions or activities that are responsible for catalysis of a cycle of elongation in the polyketide chain
Type II PKS: They are an aggregation of monofunctional proteins
Type III PKS: These are iteratively acting condensing enzymes that are present in present as homodimers.
Type I and II make use of Acyl carrier protein (ACP) that make use of acyl-CoA substrate whereas the type III are independent of ACP and act directly on the acyl-CoA substrates.
