Imagine a simplified gut epithelium, consisting of only a stomach and a colon. If the stomach secretes 18 mmol H+ into the gut lumen and the colon secretes 20 mmol HCO3-into the gut lumen, what is the net effect on extracellular fluid acid-base status? What is the net effect in the gut lumen?5. Continuing with the same quastion, if 5 mmol H+ are secreted into the stomach and 5 mmol HCO3- are secreted into the colon, what is the net effect on the bodily fluids? If any CO2 is produced in the gut lumen, where does it go?

Question:

Answer:

H+ ions decrease the pH (more acidic) and OH- will increase the pH (basic). Body produced HCO3- in response to acidic pH of stomach. Then, HCO3- break into OH- and CO2 as a results pH of fluid increase. Please find the attached picture for reactions. In case 1, pH will increase due to extra HCO3-. While in case 2; pH will remain same. The release CO2 will be absorbed into upper gut in intestine.
