I’m your own words describe How does phenotypic variance relate to heritability.

I’m your own words describe How does phenotypic variance relate to heritability.

Homework Answers

Answer #1
  • Heritability refers to the amount of phenotypic variance due to variance in genetic factors
  • Phenotypic variance (VP) is the combination of total genetic variance (VG)and nongenetic variance( environmental variance) (VE).

VP= VG+VE

  • Total genetic variance include the combination of additive genetic variance (VA), dominant genetic variance (VD) and epistatic genetic variance (VI)

VG= VA+VD+VI

  • Where as non genetic variance is the combination of variance due to environmental factors and error
  • Heritability is of two types broad sense heritability and narrow sense heritability
  • Broad sense heritability is the proportion of total genetic variance to phenotypic variance

H2= VG/VP

  • Narrow sense heritability is the proportion of additive genetic variance to the phenotypic variance

H2= VA/VP
