Describe the phospholipid bilayer in a minimum of six sentences
Ans) Phospholipid bilayer consists of proteins embedded in it.The lateral movement of lipid molecules is allowed but from one face to another is restricted because the interior is Hydrophobic (has hydrophobic tails) and the exterior has hydrophilic heads which are in contact with the aqueous environment. The primary forces in organizing lipid bilayer are Hydrophobic interactions and Van der waals interactions. There are 3 classes of lipid molecules in the bilayer namely Phospholipids, glycolipids and Sterol.Sphingomyelin is the most abundant sphingophospholipid present in the lipid bilayer. And among the phospholipids, phosphoglycerides especially phosphatidylcholine are the most numerous molecules in the plasma membrane.
