What role does the citric acid cycle play in amino acid metabolism?

Group of answer choices

breakdown of glucogenic amino acids feeds metabolites into the citric acid cycle

amino acid synthesis often relies on intermediates of the citric acid cycle

breakdown of ketogenic amino acids feeds metabolites into the citric acid cycle

a, b, & c

a & b

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The correct option is :

a & b

because, krebs cycle is fed by the metabolites which are formed by various metabolic reactions of glucogenic amino acids like glutamate enters at alpha-ketoglutamate step .

Similarly intermediates of Krebs cycle are used for Amino Acid Synthesis like oxaloacetate for aspartate synthesis.

c is incorrect because there are only two amino acids which are ketogenic only-lysine and leucine. These two amino acids enter as pyruvate but not directly into the krebs cycle.
