Why is it not possible for dna synthesis to occur continuously on both the leading and lagging strand?

In semiconservative method of DNA replication both strands act as template.We know that the two strands of a DNA double-helix are antiparallel in nature.DNA dependent DNA polymerase is the enzyme catalysing this reaction.It acts only in one direction ie 5'3' direction.Therefore DNA replication will be continuous on the template strand having polarity 3'5'(leading strand) and discontinuous on the the template strand with polarity 5'3'(lagging strand).
