Describe the roles of the citrate shuttle with regards to the fat synthesis pathway.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Solution:-

Fatty acid synthesis is a biochemical pathway which uses the Citrate Shuttle to produce palmitate which is a fatty acid from other molecule.

First citrate from mitochondrial matrix is shuttled to the cytosol via the citrate shuttle. This citrate is then converted by ATP citrate lyase into Acetyl CoA. Then Acetyl CoA Is converted into Malonyl CoA via the vitamin B7 dependent Acetyl CoA carboxylase enzyme. Finally this Malonyl CoA is converted into Palmitate, a 16C fatty acid at the end of this pathway.
