True or False. The AIRE gene codes for information allowing for the expression of self-antigens by epithelial cells in the thymus cortex allowing for immature T-cells to be “educated” about self-components.

Answer #1

The statement is FALSE.

First of all AIRE ( Autoimmune Regulator) is expressed in Medulla of thymus (inner part) not the cortex.

The AIRE protein is encoded by AIRE gene eliminates the self reactive T-cell that can cause autoimmunity as they can react with the antigen produced in the body (Self-antigen).

Through action of AIRE, medullary thymic epithelial cells express major proteins from elsewhere in the body and T cells react to those and eliminated by apoptosis (cell death). So there is negative selection of self-recognizing T-cells.

True or False A]  In the case of Central Tolerance for T-cells, it takes place in the thymus, specifically, positive selection takes place in the cortex and negative selection takes place in the medulla. B] The AIRE gene codes for information allowing for the expression of self-antigens by epithelial cells in the thymus cortex allowing for immature T-cells to be “educated” about self-components. C] An important concept of Central Tolerance that explains how B-cells develop tolerance is receptor editing. This concept...

Autoimmune polyendocrinopathy-candidiasis-ectodermal dystrophy (APECED) is a rare disease in which there is autoimmune destruction of several endocrine organs. This disease is caused by mutations in the autoimmune regulator gene called AIRE. AIRE is normally expressed primarily in the thymus and serves as a transcription factor in thymic epithelial cells. A failure to produce AIRE leads to a failure in tolerance to several self-proteins. Which ONE of the following statements best explains the influence of AIRE on self-tolerance? a. AIRE up-regulates...

Which of the following statements about induction or maintenance of T cell tolerance is NOT true? a. Peripheral T cell tolerance to an antigen may be induced by persistent and repeated stimulation of lymphocytes by that antigen in tissues. b. Peripheral T cell tolerance results when T cells recognize antigen in the setting of an innate immune response to the antigen. c. Peripheral T cell tolerance to some antigens is induced when mature T cells recognize antigen and bind B7-1...
