How is Cellular Respiration a good example of a redox reaction? Be specific as to what molecules play which roles during the reaction (write out the chemical formula and highlight the molecular roles).

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Cellular respiration is a good example of a redox reaction in a way that it involves both the oxidation and reduction reactions involving transfer of electrons. One molecule loses electrons and is oxidised while the other molecule gains electrons and is reduced.

The reaction is

C6 H12O6 + 6 O2 6 CO2 + 6 H2O + energy (ATP)

In the above reaction, glucose is oxidised while oxygen is reduced,Glucose is oxidised to form carbon dioxide while oxygen is reduced to form water.
