Relate the structure and function of the ATP molecule with the following terms:

endergonic/exergonic:

stable/unstable:

free energy/potential energy:

phosphorylation/dephosphorylation:

Homework Answers

Answer #1

-Synthesis of ATP is endergonic. Energy released from hydrolysis of ATP into ADP is used to perform cellular work usually by coupling the exergonic reaction of ATP hydrolysis with endergonic reactions.

- ATP molecule is relatively unstable because it will want to give away its phosphate group. Stabilization of ADP and Pi is much greater than ATP

-energy stored inside ATP is potential form of potential energy.

-Substrate level phosphorylation is metabolic reaction that results in formation of ATP.By transferring phosphate group to ADP from another phosphorylated compound

Opposite charges attract; like charges repel. Like dissolves like. “Stable” means “low energy” and unreactive, while “unstable” means “high energy” and reactive; and all things spontaneously become more stable over time (unless there is an input of energy), and in becoming more stable they release energy. Explain how one or more of those principles apply to each of the following: Phosphorylation/dephosphorylation is often used to change enzyme functionality. In some cells glucose can be taken up by two different transport systems: facilitated diffusion and glucose/proton symporter. a) Why is glucose not taken up by passive diffusion but by means of permeases? Describe the composition and structure of the permeases. b) Distinguish between facilitated diffusion and carbohydrate/proton symporter. The energy used to promote the active transport is the sum of the concentration-dependent energy (R∙T∙lnK) and the electrical work (z∙F∙ΔV). This process is usually linked directly or indirectly to ATP...
