  1. Describe a double-blind study. Include why this is important.

Answer #1

Double blind study is a study in which neither the researchers nor the participants of the research know who is taking the treatment. It is important as it prevents bias due to demand characteristics and Placebo effect.

In a double blind study, the result can be more precise as neither the researchers nor the participants know on which sample the drug ir the treatment is working or not and who is acting as control. This gives more precise and pure results of the treatment or research. Such type of research is done in drug testing and trials.

In a comparative double-blind randomized study of single dose fosfomycin trometamol with trimethoprim in the treatment of uncomplicated urinary infections, 26 of 35 were cured with fosfomycin trometamol and 12 of 24 were cured with the reference drug trimethoprim. Denote the eradication rates for fosfomycin trometamol and the reference drug trimethoprim by p1 and p2 respectively. (a) Evaluate the test statistic Z=p^1−p^2p^(1−p^)(1n1+1n2)−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−√. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study evaluated the effect of the herbal remedy Echinacea purpurea in treating upper respiratory tract infections in 2- to 11-year olds.
