Purple color is a color of first generation flowers. Is the the description of the phenotype or genotype?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

A genotype of an organism represents a specific combination of alleles it carries for a given gene. Whereas, phenotype is the actual observable characteristics. Phenotypes are influenced by genotype as well as the environmental factors. The trait that is exhibited by an organism due to a specific genotype is a phenotype. Examples of phenotypes are height, eye color, hair color, color of flower, seed color etc.

Here, if a dominant allele for purple flower is there in the genotype of the plant then purple flower will be the phenotype.

Purple flowers versus red flowers and long pollen versus round pollen are two traits in a sweet pea plant. When a true breeding purple/long pollen plant is crossed with a true-breeding red/round pollen plant, the F1 generation offspring all have purple flowers and long pollen. When the F1 generation is bred to itself via human-directed fertilization, a ratio of 7 : 4.9 : 4.9 : 0.05, purple/long : red/long : purple/round : red/round is noted in the F2 generation. What...

Foxglove flowers come in three main color patters as shown below and are the product of dominant epistasis between two genes. The first genes D makes a purple pigment that appears either dark purple (D_) or light purple (dd). The second gene W confines the pigment to small spots on the trumpet-like flower in flowers with genotype W_. In these spots the pigmentation is so intense that one can’t distinguish dark purple spots from light purple spots, so flowers simply...

Part A)i n plants, purple flower color is dominant to white flowers color. You crossed a white flowering plant with a purple flowering plant. A species of plant is discovered in which individual plants produce either white or purple flowers. True breeding plants that have short stems with white flowers are crossed with true breeding plants that have tall stems and purple flowers. The resulting offspring all have tall stems with purple flowers. When one of these tall, purple-flowered offspring is crossed with a short, white-flowered plant, plants with the following characteristics were obtained in equal proportions. White flowers on tall stems Purple flowers...
