Question

is CH4 to CO2 reduction or oxidation

is CH4 to CO2 reduction or oxidation

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Oxidation

CH4 +2 O2 -------> CO2 + 2 H2O

It is a combustion reaction , an oxidation.

Any reaction which constitutes oxygen as one of the ingredients, is known as oxidation reaction. Now, combustion is a process in which chemical substances burn in the presence of oxygen and this process can only occur in presence of oxygen.

In a combustion reaction oxygen is combined with the fuel source usually carbon and hydrogen based resulting in carbon dioxide and water and so this is an oxidation reaction.

Oxidation-Reduction “redox” type reactions are just one of many different forms of a chemical reaction. Combustion reactions fall under the umbrella of redox reactions. Explain what is happening in a redox reaction. What happens to an element that is oxidized? What happens to an element that is reduced? What is an oxidizing agent, and a reducing agent? Finally, assign oxidation numbers and identify what is being oxidized, what is being reduced, and what is the oxidizing and reducing agent for...
