Homework Answers

Answer #1

Answer:

Phragmoplast

Explanation:

Land plants and green algae have a rich history. While there are many similar traits between them, a trait that to unique to these two is the presence of phragmoplast.

A phragmoplast functions as a cell wall in the division of the cell into two daughter cells. It is formed during the late cytokinesis. Thus phragmoplast assists in cell division and growth. It is an exclusive feature of all land plants and some multicellular green algae belonging to the charophyte group. Together, they belong to a group called Phragmoplastophyta.

Unlike land plants, green algae do not have vascular tissues nor does it reproduce by flowers or seeds. This is because green algae are in the presence of water and hence do not need a vascular system to pump water throughout and they reproduce by spores. Therefore, they do not have the other traits in common with land plants.
