Describe the reaction carried out by DNA ligase. What does this activity do for an actively growing cell?
Answer) DNA Ligase is an enzyme that catalyzes the phosphodiester bond formation between single strands of DNA in duplex form. The linkage is covalent and involves 5 prime phosphate of one chain with 3 prime hydroxyl group of another with the help of co factors ATP and NADPH. For actively growing cell,DNA ligase works as (a) Transforming the conformation during DNA reaction so that many multiple reactions can be accomodated with nucleotides and ATP (b) During cell growth, DNA ligase contributes in replication, repair and recombination process (c) These also helps in stabilization of protein-protein interaction.
