A scientist designs a study to research if anti-anxiety medications cause weight gain. One group of study participants receives anti-anxiety medication, while the other group receives a placebo. They are provided with scales and record their weight every morning. In this study, participant body weight is the:

A.Independent variable

B.Dependent variable

C.Experimental group

D.Control group

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Dependent variable in an experiment is the one which we are testing with the help of another variable which is independent variable. Independent variable is the anti-anxiety drug. We are studying its effect on the body weight. The body weight is dependent variable. Because in this experiment we are testing the effect of the drug on body weight using the independent variable which is the anti-anxiety drug in this case. The group used to study the effect is experimental group and the other is the control group. But the variable here (body weight) is the dependent variable.

B is the right option.
