The Oldowan tools are the oldest known tools used by human ancestors. It was first found at a site in Ethiopia and was subsequently found in other sites of eastern, central and southern Africa. The tools were simple in nature. Typical of these tools were 'choppers' which were sharp edged stones used for cutting. The tools were of limited varieties often varying only in sizes. The users of this tools were members of Australopithecus and early Homo groups such as Homo Habilis. They were believed to be used some 2.5 to1.2 million years ago corresponding to lower Paleolithic sub division of the Paleolithic age. Much of the knowledge about these tools was derived from from works of Anthropologist Louis Leakey who himself named this tool industry "Oldowan".
