As part of the cell cycle control system, the progression through stages can be affected by the concentration of the ________ proteins, whose presence activate certain regulatory proteins to initiate major events in the cycle.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Answer: cyclin

As part of the cell cycle control system, the progression through stages can be affected by the concentration of the cyclin proteins, whose presence activate certain regulatory proteins to initiate major events in the cycle.

Explanation:

Cyclin refers to a family of related proteins which controls the cell cycle progression. This changing concentraion activates or deactivates the cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) enzymes that are required for cell cycle. The concentration of various cyclins vary through the different stages of cell cycle, thereby regulating it. Cdk itself is in its inactive form. When cyclin binds to Cdk, it activates it. The activaed Cdk phosphorylates various target proteins that are associated with cell cycle.

Which of the following about cell cycle control is true? The concentration of cyclins changes as Cdk concentration changes. Decreasing cyclin concentrations would increase progression through cell cycle check points. Cyclins help activate cdks by phosphorylating them. Phosphorylation of retinoblastoma will increase progression through the G1/S cell cycle check point. Bipolar attachment of chromosomes to the spindle controls the transition from G1 to S.

21. Understand the role of: Cyclins and Cdks in the control system of the cell cycle, know the main types of cyclins (G1/S-cyclin, S-cyclin, and M-cyclin), the function/purpose of each of these cyclins and subsequently the point of the cell cycle where each is found in highest concentration

Experiment 3: The Importance of Cell Cycle Control Some environmental factors can cause genetic mutations that result in a lack of proper cell cycle control (mitosis). When this happens, the possibility for uncontrolled cell growth occurs. In some instances, uncontrolled growth can lead to tumors, which are often associated with cancer, or other biological diseases. In this experiment, you will review some of the karyotypic differences that can be observed when comparing normal, controlled cell growth and abnormal, uncontrolled cell...
