Mutations are the change in nucleotide sequence in DNA of an organism. This change alters the protein synthesized by the gene. This change could be induced or spontaneous.

Most mutation makes a gene fauly or lethal for survival of an organism but rarely mutations can give an organism, an adaptive benefit over other members of its population. With time this individual with this adaptation is chosen by natual selection and it proliferates.

So, correct answer is '(b) they rarely result in an adaptation'.
