1. How many molecules of pyruvic acid are made from a single molecule of glucose?

2. Not all the energy from glucose is turned into ATP. What is the rest of the energy released as?

3. What type of process is fermentation considered to be since it does not require oxygen?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

1. 2 molecules of pyruvic acid. The process of glycolysis start with one molecule of glucose and at the end it produces 2 molecules of pyruvate as end product.

In this reaction, there is 4 molecules of ATP and 2 molecules of NADH and 2 molecules of pyruvic acids are the end product of glycolysis.

2. Not all energy from glucose is turned into ATP. Each glucose is able produce 38 molecules of ATP. This total number of ATP is considered as 36% of the glucose only. Then the rest of the energy of glucose is lost as heat. So that the 64% of the energy of glucose is lost as heat and 36% are converted to ATP.

3. Fermentation is an anaerobic process because it doesn’t need require oxygen. It is the process of partial degradation of the sugar without the presence of oxygen.

Hope it helps you. All the best

Thank you

Determine how many molecules of glucose is needed for 1 molecule of palmitate (C16). Assume that all NADPH consumed in this process is also produced from glucose using the pentose phosphate pathway in which all glucose 6-phosphate entering the PPP is converted to CO2, , H2O, and NADPH (no ribose 5-phosphate is formed). Required ATP should also be synthesized from glucose.
