How will two types of organisms, when cultured together, grow when the growth medium contains organic carbon and the growth chamber contains ONLY carbon dioxide. All traces of hydrogen has been removed. Explain.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Both organism can grow in this limiting medium only when the product formed by organism 1 can be substrate for organism 2 and the similarly product formed by organism 2 is become substrate of organism 1.

For eg.spevific organism utilizes organism substances to for CO2 and H2O and ATP by process of breakdown of organic substances (heterotropes). ATP will be utilizes by heterophes for its own survival while other product CO2 and H2O will released outside which are taken by organism 2 (autotrophed) and fixed or convert CO2 and H2O into organism substances. So this cycle continous and both organi can survive easily. It's also called co-culture.

Hope it's clear..thanks

Cells of Pichia pastoris yeast are cultured in medium containing glycerol (C3H8O3) as the carbon source and ammonium hydroxide as the nitrogen source. Under aerobic conditions, the yield of biomass from substrate is 0.57 g/g. Biomass, CO2, and H2O are the only major products of this culture. (a) Estimate the cooling requirements per g of biomass produced. (b) When all the glycerol has been consumed, methanol (CH4O) is added to the culture. There is enough ammonium hydroxide remaining in the...

Carbon Dating: All living organisms contain two isotopes (types) of carbon; carbon-12 ( 12C) and carbon-14 (14C). Carbon-12 is stable, meaning that its atoms do not decay. Carbon-14 however, is radioactive or unstable, meaning that an atom of carbon-14 may decay. It does this by throwing off an electron and thus transforming itself into Nitrogen 14. The ratio of carbon-14 to carbon-12 is the same for all living organisims, about 1/10, 000. However, once an organisim dies the carbon-14 begins...

Activity 1: Scientific Reports You may have heard the question “If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?” A similar question can be asked about experiments. “If a researcher performs an experiment and never publishes the result has science been performed?” Many people would say no because science is the accumulation of knowledge. If the results of an experiment are not published, knowledge is not gained. The final...
