The oxidation of a compound means release of electron and these electrons are a source of energy. These electrons are stored in form of reducing molecules such as NADH2 and FAD2.

The energy of stored electrons is released gradually and efficiently inside inner mitochondrial membrane through electron transport chain which consists of different protein complex.

The gradual release of energy helps in trapping and

storing more energy from oxidation of respiratory substrates. Electron carrier plays an important role in tapping stored energy in bonds of a molecule that

are oxidized in the process such as Glycolysis.

They help in increasing the efficiency of process. The gain of energy from breakdown of bonds remains high.
