Select the appropriate effect of frequency-dependent selection on variation: maintained/increased orreduced

Select the appropriate effect of stabilizing selection on variation: maintained/increased orreduced

Answer #1
  • Genetic drift reduces the genetic variation: genetic Drift reduces the heterozygosity and increase homozygosity. During genetic drift some allele get eliminated from the population and some get fixed as a result the gene pool decreases.it is more prominent in small population.
  • Frequency dependent selection maintained genetic variation: frequency dependent selection is of two type positive and negative. Positive selection favor the most common phenotype whereas negative selection favour the rare phenotype and hence result in maintaining the genetic variation.
  • Stabilizing selection decreases Genetic variation: it favour the phenotype which has the intermediate trait . Extreme phenotype get eliminated as a result gene pool get reduced.

Some recessive genetic diseases are almost always fatal. However, in some populations, the recessive allele is found in greater frequencies than expected because there is heterozygous advantage for those carriers of the recessive alel . we this with the sickle cell allele. In this scenario, the sickle cell allele is maintained in populations with endemic malaria. New evidence suggests that the genetic diversity of the Alaskan gray wolf increased significantly after the last ice age, when this population was no longer isolated from other populations. This increase in genetic diversity is most likely due to _______. mutation genetic drift gene flow natural selection The population of Florida panthers is declining rapidly because of loss of habitat. What effect is genetic drift likely to have on this population? Genetic drift tends to increase fitness because it speeds...
