What are two problems with that definition of evolution we have been using? Definition: a change in allele frequencies of a population(species). Clearly explain your answer.

Answer #1

Evolution is the adaptability of species through a period of time for surviving in changing environmental conditions. Two problems with that definition of evolution we have been using are:

  • There are many different mechanisms which results in evolution, for example natural selection, genetic drift and mutation. Mutation changes the allelic frequency and genetic drift occurs due to random fluctuations of any allele in a gene pool and loss of any allele from a homogeneous gene pool is called genetic drift whereas natural selection allows the best fitted genotype to survive in changing environmental conditions and eliminate the other gennotype which are not fit.
  • Evolution follows sequential manner of somatic changes, genetic changes and reproductive isolation and leads to formation of new species from ancestral species, this in turn increases the heterogenisity in the population

Ten problems have been solved by method A and twelve problems of same kind have been solved by method B. Mean time required to solve ten problems by method A is 300 seconds. If we solve twelve problems of same kind by method B, the mean time required be 280 second. Assume the population standard deviation for method A is 35 seconds and for method B is 29 seconds. At the .05 significance level, can we conclude that the mean...

A butterfly species is found on two neighbouring islands. 8% of the population on island 1 has spotted wings, a recessive trait (the presence of wing spots is encoded by a single locus with two alleles). Only 5% of the population on island 2 has spotted wings. Some butterflies from island 1 were blown to island 2 during a severe hurricane and 20% of island 2’s population now consists of individuals blown over from island 1. Answer the following questions:...

In a bird species, the shape of the beak is encoded by a locus with two 2 co-dominant alleles Na and Nz.
