Please explain the idea that energy flows through a biological system, while nutrients cycle, with a description of one relevant example for each.

Answer #1

Energy and nutrients, or chemicals, flow through an ecosystem. While energy flows through the ecosystem and cannot be recycled, nutrients cycle within an ecosystem and are reused. Both energy flow and chemical cycling help define the structure and dynamics of the ecosystem.

Example is food chain: At each stage of a food chain, energy is “burned” for an organism's respiration and lost to heat, so decreasing amounts are available to consumers at higher trophic levels. A standard approximation is that a mere 10 percent of the energy stored at one trophic level passes to the next one up.

Describe the “energy story” for the situation below. Be sure to specify the system while including all the relevant energy transfers to/from the system, and transformations within the system. You should also
indicate whether you think the the process described in the situation is reversible or not (as described in lecture, a qualitative way to determine whether a process is reversible would be to watch a recording of that process played backwards, and conclude whether that would normally occur in...

All mammals have oxygen sensing system to directly monitor the oxygen availability and energy sensing system which indirectly monitors the carbon source supply. Considering the important role of nitrogen element in biological system, one can assume the existence of a nitrogen-sensing system as well. If you agree, discuss what this system might be. If you do not agree, write down your reasoning and argument. Either way you choose, please cite relevant reference to support your argument.

Please Explain in detail while water is captured by a well, flows to a water treatment plant, and undergoes treatment to drinking water standards? Include regulated constituents, e.g., typical constituents covered by Primary Drinking Water Standards (microorganisms and turbidity; in organics; organics; disinfectants; disinfection byproducts); and in the Secondary Drinking Water Standards (you can look these up; include hardness).

Energy in Resonant Circuits: Consider how the energy flows around different components of a circuit at resonance. General Role of Circuit Components: In general, where is energy input into the circuit? Where is energy taken out of the circuit? Where is energy stored in the circuit? Analyzing Power through Components: To see how the energy flows between different components, we should understand what the power is through various components at different times. Consider a resonant circuit with (for simplicity) L=R=C=V0=1...

In a chemical processing plant, liquid cyclohexane (p = 48.5 lbm/ft^3) flows through .a piping system (pump, piping, valves, etc.) at a rate of 1200 gpm as it is being transported from one process to the next. The pressure drop through the pipe system is 6.4 psi. The facility is automated and runs 24 h/day, 365 days/year. The cost of energy to operate the pump in the system is $0.12/kWh. Annual maintenance costs for the piping system are 3% of...

Opposite charges attract; like charges repel. Like dissolves like. “Stable” means “low energy” and unreactive, while “unstable” means “high energy” and reactive; and all things spontaneously become more stable over time (unless there is an input of energy), and in becoming more stable they release energy. Explain how one or more of those principles (above) apply to each of the following (below): 1. Chemical bonds form between atoms: ionic, hydrogen, and covalent. 2. Particular proteins always assume particular elements of...

Suppose a vertical pipe is to be used as part of a system to manually cycle nutrients upward from the floor of a lake. (Many lakes do this naturally, some do not. Green Lake, near Syracuse, NY, is one such lake.) A pump is to be installed on the lake floor at the base of the pipe. The base of the pipe will have a diameter of 9 cm. The nozzle of the pipe at the top will have a...
