Imagine that James (who is right-handed) and Kate (who is left-handed) have two children: Nate (left-handed) and Nora (right-handed). We know that right-handedness is dominant over left-handedness, and that this gene follows Mendellian laws. Determine the genotype for each of the four family members, and then explain how you know.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

right-handedness is dominant over left-handedness

let the alleles be R- right-handedness, r- left-handedness

James is right-handed and  Kate left-handed they have 2 children Nate and Nora, Nate is left-handed and Nora is right-handed.

Since they have left-handed progeny James is heterozygous, If he was homozygous dominant, then all of his gametes will carry R allele and all of his progeny would have right-handedness.

so James is Rr, Kate is rr, Nora is Rr and Nate is rr

Rr * rr

R r
r Rr ( right-handed) rr ( left handed)

The vast majority of people have hand dominance--they are either left-handed or right-handed. In this question we will ignore the very small percentage of the population who are ambidextrous (i.e., those who use both hands equally well or equally badly!). A researcher believes that men are more likely to be left-handed than women. To check this she checked the dominant hand of random samples of 200 men and 200 women, and found 24 men and 18 women to be left-handed....

4. If you can taste the chemical PTC, it means you have at least one copy of a dominant gene for (that will be C). If you can't taste it, you have two copies of the recessive allele for tasting PTC- (that will be c) therefore making a non-taster's genotype cc). A man who can taste PTC marries a woman who can also taste PTC. Both partners each have one parent who cannot taste PTC and one who can. If...
