Homework Answers

Answer #1

Ventilation: Process of pushing air out and pulling air into lungs.

Process involving moving of clean air to a space and dirty air out of that space is called ventilation.

External respiration: Moving of oxygen from the lungs to the blood and moving CO2 out of the blood and into lungs.

External respiration happens in the lungs in alveoli.

Respiration: Moving CO2 out of the body and O2 into the body regardless of where it happens.

Respiration is a general term.

Internal respiration: Moving CO2 out of the body cells and into the blood and O2 out of the blood and into the body cells.

Internal respiration happens in tissues or inside of the body in cells.

Cellular respiration: Using O2 to make energy for the body. CO2 is the waste product.

Cellular respiration combines glucose and oxygen to form water, energy and carbon dioxide.

Background Almost all animal and plant cells require oxygen and give off carbon dioxide. This is called gas exchange and it occurs by passive diffusion. Some animals do all or most of their gas exchange across their skin (for example amphibians) but they have very low metabolisms and use very little oxygen and get rid of very little carbon dioxide. On the other hand humans (and other mammals) have very high metabolic requirements and we can’t rely on gas exchange...
