Explain the effect that special scale may have on diversity-disease ecology. Consider studies where spatial scale has and has not played a part in infectious diseases.

Answer #1

The spatial scale or the size of the area that is studied moderates the shape of the diversity-disease ecology. It has been observed that the presence of different hosts in a particular area halts the spread of a pathogen. Hence concluding that biodiversity or 'dilution' have a negative impact on the spread on the disease. However, it should be kept in mind that the spatial scale is critical when determining the effect of biodiversity on diseases.

The local scales shows a decrease in the spread on the disease while the regional scale shows an increase in the spread of a disease when the biodiversity in both these regions is present. Thus, the spatial scale that is being observed is crucial when determining the relationships of a population and a disease.

Consider the following hypothetical diseases, and answer part A, B, and C below: Disease X is very deadly with a mortality rate >30%. However, it is only spread through bodily fluids and so is difficult to transmit between people. Disease Y produces mild symptoms, and has a mortality rate <1%. However, it can be spread through the air and remains infectious on unwashed surfaces. Because of this, it is extremely transmissible. A) Which disease will require a higher vaccination rate...

The habitat complexity hypothesis may partially explain why the tropics have particularly high diversity. The habitat complexity hypothesis suggests that tropical biodiversity is high in part because: The tropics have longer seasons than temperate zones Tropical climates are more variable than temperate climates Dense vegetation in the tropics creates a structurally complex habitat Tropics have many more soil types than temperate zones

Solow Growth Model Question: Consider an economy where output (Y) is produced according to function Y=F(K,L). L is number of workers and Y is the capital stock. Production function F(K,L) has constant returns to scale and diminishing marginal returns to capital and labor individually. Economy works under assumption that technology is constant over time. The economy is in the steady-state capital per worker. Draw graph. Next scenario is that the rate of depreciation of capital increases due to climate change...

Consider a market where potential sellers have an informational advantage over buyers. In this market potential sellers may possess either a high-quality or a low-quality good. Assume that each potential seller has one good that she may either sell or retain. If the seller has a low-quality good, it is worth $15 to her, while high-quality goods are worth $45. One half of the potential sellers possess high-quality goods, while the other half possesses low-quality goods. Buyers are at an...

A new disease called Sudden Adult Disability Syndrome (SADS) has become the most common cause of death among previously health 18-24 year olds. The etiology of SADS is unknown but is thought to be infectious. SADS is a disease of sudden onset that without treatment produces progressive weakness, slow mental deterioration and death within a year 50% of the time. The other 50% of the individuals who develop SADS make a spontaneous full recovery without any treatment. There are three...
