What two DNA repair systems are used by the immune system, and why?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The two DNA repair system by immune system include global genomic repair (GGR) and transcription-coupled repair (TCR). They help to prevent mutagenesis, carcinogenesis and cell lethality. GGR helps to repair the lesions formed in the DNA of the genome on the other hand TCR is r esponsible only for the transcribed DNA strand in expressed genes that has any faults. These mechanism prevents mutations and genomic instability because this DNA damage could result in the development of a variety of cancers.

Why would a high rate of mutation create challenges for the immune system? A) the coronavirus will change into a flu virus B) when the RdRP is making new DNA, it will have different base pairs than the original genome C) the cell's DNA will get damaged and cause changes in cellular function D) the outside shape of the virus' proteins directly determines whether the immune system can recognize it

Pick the statement about DNA repair that is true. Base excision repair removes bulky DNA lesions like thymidine dimers. Nucleotide excision repair is used immediately after replication to correct errors that escape proofreading. Direct repair directly changes modified bases back to their original structure. Mismatch repair reduces the fidelity of DNA polymerase. SOS repair uses DNA glycosylases to recognize and remove a specific type of modified base.

5. DNA repair enzymes preferentially repair mismatched bases on the newly synthesized DNA strand, using the old DNA strand as a template. If mismatches were instead repaired without regard for which strand served as template, would mismatch repair reduce replication errors? Would such a mismatch repair system result in fewer mutations, more mutations, or the same number of mutations as there would have been without any repair at all? Explain your answers.

Based on what you know about the immune system, EXPLAIN WHY a defect in the gene encoding AIRE would result in a loss of tolerance to self-antigens. What is the function of AIRE?
