what can be done to limit the chance of new antibiotic resistant bacteria from forming?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

1) When faced with antibiotics the bacteria die , except those mutant bacteria in which a resistance is already present against the antibiotic. Slowely the number and the aggressiveness of such bacteria and there resistance to them increases . Actually due to natural selection, those bacteria are selected again and again which are best to survive against the antibiotics.

2) Multidrugs should be given to the bacteria at the same time. So, that the bacteria are not able to survive. Some bacteria which may have resusteance against some antibiotic will not have resistance against the others. And thus, they can be killed more efficiently. Thus it decreases the chances of getting a resistant bacteria to many folds.

1. Read the following excerpt from the Center for Disease Control about Antibiotic resistance and explain why this is an example of evolution by natural selection similar to the example shown in your textbook in Figure 1.16. What trait is being selected in this case? "“Antibiotic resistance occurs when bacteria develop the ability to defeat the drugs designed to kill them. When bacteria become resistant, antibiotics cannot fight them, and the bacteria multiply. Antibiotic resistance is one of the most...

Nearly all the antibiotics used to stop bacterial infections are natural compounds that come from microbes themselves. For example, penicillin is derived from a fungus, while vancomycin, the antibiotic used when bacteria are resistant to many other drugs, comes from a bacterium. Furthermore, although many antibiotics are chemically synthesized to resemble natural antibiotics, the “models” for them are natural products of microbes themselves. As more bacteria become resistant to traditional antibiotics, alternative drugs must be found. Recently, scientists discovered a...
