Conjugation the process of transfer of plasmid from one bacterium to another.

The bacterium which contains the plasmid is called as Donor bacterium and the bacterium which receives the plasmid is called as recipient bacterium.

It was first studied in Streptococcus pneumoniae by Griffiths.

The process requires direct contact between the participating bacteria which occurs by the formation of conjugation tube. Conjugation tube is formed by sex pilus.
