Oxygen is most important in final step of electron transport chain. Cytochrome oxidase IV convert oxygen to water with the help of electrons flow in ETC by NADH and FADH2 molecules.

If no oxygen present in cell means no conversion of oxygen to water which leads to increase in electron in the cells, so to overcome this NADH and FADH2 reduction decreases and also decrease the kreb cycle function which is the major producer of NADH and FADH2. Decrease in krebs cycle leads to decrease in glycolysis process makes the total lack of energy in the cells and leads to cell death.
