An explosive reaction comprises of a huge amount of energy released along with it in the form of heat, light and radiation. Along with it, a large amount of gases are also released during an explosion. The atmosphere contains a large amount of air in the form of oxygen. As a result of explosion, this gaseous oxygen gains energy and tends to bind with numberous gases present in the atmosphere as well as those resulted from the explosion.

It has been found that besides some complex gases, oxygen reacts with sulphur, carbon and nitrogen to give rise to a combination of SO2, CO2, N2O, NO and NO2. These gases are rapidly increased in the atmosphere. Thus, the total oxygen content in the air decreases generating a hypoxic or anoxic situation.
