Answer #1

Bacteria genome recombination can result in antibiotic resistance, and one of these methods is transduction.

Discussion and explanation:

Bacterial genome recombination is one of the important mechanism by which bacteria originally sensitive to a particular antibiotic becomes resistant by acquiring the gene responsible for antibiotic resistance from some other bacteria.

Three common ways of genetic transfer in bacteria are :

1) Transformation - Bacterium acquires new gene from its environment.

2) Transduction - Bacterium acquires gene by means of virus.

3) Conjugation - One bacterium (recepient bacterium) receives genetic element from other (donor) bacterium through a tube like structure called pilus.

7)  Select the true statements about how bacteria can get new genetic material.  Circle all that apply. Conjugation can occur only between bacteria of the same species. In transformation, bacteria can pick up pieces of bacterial DNA from their surroundings. It is necessary for viruses to be lysogenic for restricted transduction to occur. In transduction, bacterial genes end up in viral capsids. Bacterial conjugation can use pili, which act as pseudopods, engulfing genes from another bacterium to incorporate them into the cell’s...

Part F - Recombination and resistance The introductory passage explains that Vibrio cholerae bacteria may benefit from being able to obtain genes from their prey. What would be the best way to test whether they can benefit within one week of exposure to prey with a gene that confers resistance to ampicillin, an antibiotic that is commonly used in microbiology laboratories? Choose all of the steps that you should include. Transfer V. cholerae that have been exposed for one week...

It had been a busy day for Marsha Chamberland. She had spent most of it cleaning and running errands in prepara- tion for her brother-in-law Ed’s return, and now she was preparing a quick dinner for her family. Ed, an industry official whose job it was to decide whether or not new products needed premarket approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, had spent the last two weeks in Tennessee expressing his views on genetic engineering in food. He...
