If you put your hand on a red-hot piece of metal, the immediate response of pulling it away would be an example of a(n) __________.
Answer: Reflex (action)
When we touch a hot stove or hot object , we pull your hand away
as fast as we can. This is due to Sensory receptors in the skin
which sense extreme temperature and the early signs of tissue
damage. This activates an action potential, which travels along the
sensory fiber from the skin, through the dorsal spinal root to the
spinal cord, and directly triggers a ventral horn motor
neuron.
In turn neuron sends a signal along its axon to excite the biceps
brachii, causing contraction of the muscle and flexion of the
forearm at the elbow to remove the hand from the hot stove or hot
object. The withdrawal reflex consist of more components, such as
stopping the opposing muscle and balancing posture while the arm is
forcefully withdrawn.
