The selective media is designed to permit the growth of specific types of microorganisms only. It is a culture medium. Example: For instance, EMB permits only for the growth of gram negative bacteria. Selective media is made up of certain ingredients to prevent the growth of specific types of microorganisms in the culture & supports the growth of others.
Differential media permmits growth of every kind of microorganisms, but certain kinds look distinct, generating a new color. Mainly, differential media is utilised to differentiate b/w distinct groups of microorganisms that are closely related. Example : blood agar, let's the bacteria to be differentiated by the hemolysis type.
Both are used to determine or isolate microorganisms.
