Describe what happens to the slope of the exponential phase for a population of tetracycline resistant bacteria growing in the presence of the antibiotic tetracycline.  Explain what you have described.

ANSWER: The slope of the exponential curve of a tetracycline resistant bacteria in the presence of tetracycline will decrease since the overall growth of bacteria will slow down.

The plasmid contains the gene for resistance and in the presence of antibiotic for which it is resistant, the bacteria has to express more resistance gene to maintain its resistance, for which it needs energy. The energy is thus diverted towards maintaining resistance and this will lead to overall decrease in the growth of bacteria.
