Class, as you will see in your lab from this week there are a couple of different mechanisms that take place - two that we can start with mechanical digestion and chemical digestion. What can you tell me about these two and where do they occur?
Mechanical Digestion: physically breaks down the food into smaller pieces of food though increase surface area for digestion.
Mouth - By teeth, tongue, and palates
Oesophagus - peristalsis movement
Stomach - the muscular churning action of the stomach
Small intestine - Action of Bile and peristalsis
Chemical Digestion uses enzymes to chemically break down complex food substances into their simplest form.
Amylase (starch to maltose, sucrose, fructose, glucose)
Pepsin (Protein to the polypeptide, amino acids)
Renin (milk protein)
Lipase (fats to fatty acids and glycerol)
