Law of segregation: This law states that a trait is controlled by 2 alleles which are separated during gamate formation.

Here 2 alleles indicates the 2 allele present in the homologous chromosomes. That is one allele in each homologous chromosome. These 2 homologous chromosomes segregate during the Anaphase I of meiosis I.

Law of independent assortment: This law states that the segregation ioccurs in a random manner.

Homologous chromosomes that segregate in Anaphase I are randomly assigned to each gamate during Metaphase I.
