Ilioinguinal
nerve is considered as the partial
content of the inguinal canal.
This nerve is said to be the partial content of inguinal canal
because it enters the canal through roof by
piercing the internal oblique muscles and leaves the canal through
the superficial inguinal ring. The ilioinguinal nerve does
not pass through the deep inguinal ring, and thus only
travels through part of the inguinal canal.
Ilioinguinal nerve is a mixed nerve. The nerve enters the
canal by piercing the internal oblique muscle about 2.5 cm. below
and medial to the anterior superior iliac
spine. It is situated superficial to the spermatic cord,
and leaves
the canal through superficial ring. Ilio- Inguinal nerve conveys
fibres from the ventral ramus of L1, but after piercing the
internal oblique it conveys sensory fibres only.
