Compare and contrast oxygenic versus anoxygenic photosynthesis. Explain the (1) differences in the flow of electrons, (2) where the electrons come from, and (3) give an example of organisms that carry out oxygenic and an example of organisms that use anoxygenic photosynthesis.

Oxygenic photosynthesis includes the generation of oxygen during the synthesis of sugar while anoxygenic doesn't generate the oxygen.

  1. The difference in the flow of electrons- The flow of electrons includes both the photosystem that is photosystem I and II. While the flow of electrons in anoxygenic photosynthetic organisms is only through the photosystem I.
  2. where the electrons come from- In oxygenic photosynthesis water is the source of electron while in the anoxygenic photosynthesis hydrogen, hydrogen sulfide and ferrous ions are the electron donor from which the electro comes.
  3. Example- Plants and algae perform the oxygenic photosynthesis while certain bacteria perform the anoxygenic photosynthesis.
